Fast forward to today. The 20th Century saw prosperity and successful Christian missionary endeavour with churches planted all around the world. Then the gates of Hades retaliated. Fallen leaders, cults, negative media, pandemic, and other issues abounded. Local churches struggle to regain momentum. In this context, God call for Christians to “return to Jerusalem” and help rebuild the church– for glory and peace. We may very well be in the century where Christ returns. Here are three ways our LORD helps us rebuild. Jesus said, “I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” (Matt.16:18).

1. God provides a suitable context. v1 In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came.

King Darius followed King Cyrus, consolidated the Persian Empire, and would confirm the edict for the Jews to rebuild their Temple. Thankfully: traditionally Christian nations remain prosperous; most nations are open to the Gospel; people are interested in spiritual things. Wisely, they pray to God for  help in times of need.

2. God speaks to responsible leaders. v1 … the word of the LORD came .. to Zerubbabel (governor), and to Joshua (the high priest).

God still speaks to church leaders, guiding them on what is to be done. Joshua, the high priest, was in spiritual responsibility, and Zerubbabel was the governor. These both had the authority of their lineage from, respectively, Aaron and King David. Haggai, the prophet, has no identified lineage. His authority was from the Holy Spirit and recognised by everyone. In the New Testament, apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers are given by Christ to equip his people for works of service. (Ephesians 4:11-12).

3. God uses available people. v2 This is what the LORD Almighty says: “These people say, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the LORD’s house.’”
